Radial balance is any type of balance based on a circle with its design extending from the center. An easy way to create radial balance is by using a variety of lines.
Lines can be bent into curves or broken into angles. When drawn and placed in a certain way, lines can appear 3-Dimensional. Students were shown how to create their own radial Line design that acts as an illusion.
- Horizontal lines go left and right and make us think of rest.
- Vertical lines go up and down and appear strong. They make us think of people or buildings.
- Diagonal lines appear to be on the move.

- To create a radial line design, start by drawing a horizontal line near the middle of your paper. Use a ruler to be sure that it will remain straight from one side to another.
- Using the ruler, draw a variety of diagonal lines that meet and pass through the middle of the paper. Be sure that all lines meet up in a single point in the center.
- Using either curved or angled lines, carefully draw small lines inside of each triangular section. Be sure to alternate the direction of the pointed line where in some sections they point toward the middle and in other sections they point away from the middle. For this example, I chose to use curved lines.
- TIP: Be sure to give your lines plenty of space from one another and allow the lines to touch one another on the outer sides.
- Picking two colors, create a striped pattern inside of the triangular sections. For this example, I used blue and red.
